It seems that some people are happy when they finally realize where they are in life and learn to accept it enough to let the rest of the world know. That’s what happened to 51-year-old Ty Herndon, country music star, who recently came out as a gay man. He said that he realized that he had a story he needed to share more than five years ago, but he’s just now opening up about his lifestyle and the way he feels about finally letting the world know where he stands as a gay man, a country music singer and a man who just wants to be accepted.
“I’m an out, proud and happy gay man,” he said on Tuesday during an interview with PEOPLE magazine.
“During an Anthony Robbins seminar, I realized I had an incredible story that could possibly help someone’s son or daughter or grandchild’s life not be as difficult as mine has been. Maybe they wouldn’t have to go through as much pain and suffering. It’s my time to tell my truth,” he said of the realization that he needs to tell the world who he really is and stop hiding his true feelings about love and relationships.
He goes on to say that he was suspicious of being gay when he was only 10 and he was finally able to come out to his friends and family when he was about 20-years-old. He goes on to say that his mother likely knew he was gay before he knew.
“My mother probably knew I was gay before I did. I remember sitting down with her and having the conversation. She was more concerned about me having a happy life. You have to be able to do that in your own skin,” he said of his mother’s feelings about him coming out. Now that the world knows, maybe he can finally help a child go through the process of coming out.
